Cisterians
The Cisterians were 12th century monasteries begun by Bernard of Clairveux. They were great
corporations, thoroughly tied to the web of economic life. The Benedictines and Cisterians were rival claimants to evangelical truth on common ground. The Benedictines contrast with Cisterians as poverty, simplicity, purity on one with aggression, arrogance, militant, discipline on
other.
